The current procedures to diagnose breast cancer by biopsy are very stressful for the patient and very expensive. As is now, the intervention now takes place outside the bore of the MRI by performing ultrasound, CT or MRI-guided biopsies. According to the Dutch guideline for breast cancer screening for high-risk patients (age <50 years, dense breast tissue, DCIS/glands, HER2+), this group needs to be guided directly into the MRI. The other patients first go through the regular path from their GP to the hospital to an inferior quality scan (CT/ultrasound) and sometimes still have to be sent to the MRI. This of course includes weeks of waiting time; extremely uncomfortable for the patient.

Solution

By using the innovative (semi) real-time MRI-guided biopsy robot, the procedure will be reduced to such an extent that at least twice as many procedures can be performed in the MRI in the same amount of time as a doctor would perform manually. More patients can thereby be treated quicker and better. This is not only beneficial for patient comfort, it also has a positive effect on the other side of the equation: it frees up more time for the doctor and the CT/ultrasound departments are less occupied and therefore available for other activities.
