The four Groningen start-ups CC DiagnosticsIVWearEV Biotech and Ocean Grazer have been nominated for the Academic Startup Competition 2019. Together with 24 other nominees, they are competing for a place in the top ten of the most pioneering Innovations of science in the Netherlands. CC Diagnostics and EV Biotech are start-up members of the LIFE Cooperative.

Academic Startup Competition

The Academic Startup Competition is an initiative of VSNU, the Netherlands Academy of Technology and Innovation (AcTI) and StartupDelta. The election consists of this nomination by the various universities in the Netherlands and a final on 14 May in which a jury ultimately selects ten winners who will become part of the list of the most pioneering innovations in science in the Netherlands. During the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) on 4 and 5 June in The Hague, these startups will also have the opportunity to present their startup to a world audience.

CC Diagnostics: cervical cancer test

CC Diagnostics is developing a new test for cervical cancer that makes testing more efficient, cheaper and more woman-friendly. The company was founded by three students from the University of Groningen: Jean-Luc Kraaijenoord, Wisse Krikke and Nutte van Belzen. In collaboration with researchers from the UMCG, this DNA hypermethylation PCR test is valorised, which ultimately leads to an annual cost saving of 120M in Europe. After an extensive testing and development phase, the intention is to have the technology available to doctors and patients in the Netherlands and Europe in 2022.

EV Biotech

EV Biotech

EV Biotech creates micro-organisms that can effectively produce high-quality molecules in a biological way. These micro-organisms are used to produce high-quality molecules on an industrial scale. The company has created a new production platform for the production of high-quality molecules using computer models and micro-organisms. The production of the high-quality molecules is organic, green and effective. In addition, the products produced by this platform are of very high purity, which often proves to be a problem with chemical synthesis.

From January 2019 the company, under the leadership of CEO Linda Dijkshoorn, moved into the new Innolab Agrifood on Zernike Campus Groningen.
